Madonna!Black pied steaks on cleared forestland, the symphony of the panpipes, untapped revolutionary potential – and above all of the emblems of the panopticon of South American identity hovers the translucent Mother of God as the symbol of the Roman Catholic monoculture. On the lookout for national stereotypes and liberation from the bonds of attribution, the German poet Timo Berger crosses the borders between the nations of Latin America. He discovered that “the national folklore is not up to date.” For in Mataderos, the meatpacker district of Buenos Aires, ruminants are long gone and instead soy for worldwide SUVs and the frying pans of the “LOHAS” (“for health and sustainability”) is transhipped.
