Frankenstein's Cat

No, this cat is not ill. It is a pedigree; a hairless breed. Was it bred as a pet for allergic people? In her work Man-made Wonders, photographer Mona Mönnig depicts creatures of modern animal breeding in order to show the human drive to create; our desire to subordinate other living things and produce a universe en miniature. The result: emaciated greyhounds and miniature horses. The sad images warn us not to vainly forget the animal behind the reproduction. Mona Mönnig’s curiosity shop won the contest „gute aussichten - junge deutsche fotografie 2009/2010“, which annually awards young photographers. The works by the winners will be exhibited in early June at the Goethe-Institut Madrid and from mid-June they can be viewed at the Goethe-Institut Washington D.C.
