How does one communicate on stage? Do we inevitably miss one another’s point in different languages? Are plays by Aristophanes, Goethe and Wagner just as impressive in a multilingual setting? In late March, eight Italian schools asked these questions in the Goethe-Institut’s nationwide pupils’ theatre competition On Stage in German – In scena col tedesco. During their German lessons, the pupils put on classical plays bilingually: in Italian and German. The three winning groups will now compete with pupils from around the world at the Tenth European Youth Theatre Festival of Languages “LINGUE IN SCENA!” in Turin until 8 May while making multilingualism performable even without subtitles.
