Get Up On Stage!Poetry? Performance? Talent show? A poetry slam is a unique kind of reading. With polemical words, breathless rhythms and the excitement of a contest, poetry slams offer literature a new platform. Young people use them to express themselves and give their ideas free rein. There are no rules; the topics can be critical, witty, funny and sometimes indefinable. Only singing is not allowed. For three minutes, each participant is given the chance to win over the audience. Ever since January 2009 the Goethe-Institut Madrid has been organizing monthly Poetry Slams at the Café Libertad 8, thus offering an additional stimulus to the alternative Madrid arts and literature scene.
