A Beginning Retrospective

We are still at the beginning of a new century. How did we get here? Where are we going? At the writers’ workshop The 21st Century – How was it for you? at the Sala Beckett in Barcelona, twelve young, international playwrights hazarded a first look back while also asking about the outlook for the future. Under the direction of Simon Stephens, the participants dealt with formative events and figures in their countries. On the recommendation of the Goethe-Institut Barcelona and the Stückemarkt of the Berlin Theatertreffen, German playwright Oliver Kluck was invited to the seminar. Kluck’s play Smith & Jauch (photo), as those of his colleagues, was translated into Catalan and English and performed as a play reading at the Obrador d’Estiu in Barcelona.
