Euphoria and Offsides

Bridging differences: The gap between the alienated wealthy and the desperate poor is part of life in Johannesburg. In the year of the football World Cup, the Argentinean choreographer Constanza Macras examined the host country of South Africa with all its contradictions and potentials. Three performers from her theatre group worked with South African dancers on the piece The Offside Rules – a reflexion on the effects of the football euphoria in a city of extreme contrasts. It focuses on Johannesburg’s commuter system, which was especially reconstructed for the world cup. It is the scene of encounters and collisions between different people, who deal with the role of football in politics, economics and society.
