Sweet, Bitter and Precious
People have been cultivating cocoa for thousands of years. A gift from the gods, aphrodisiac, currency, pleasure – the importance of cocoa for humankind has many facets. Yet cocoa not only makes life sweet. Today entire regions are dependent on its cultivation and export. For 150 years the south of the Brazilian state of Bahia has been a significant producing region. In a photography exhibition, the Goethe-Institut Salvador-Bahia is presenting historic images from the private archives of the Bahia Wildberger family whose ancestors exported cocoa on a large scale. The exhibition is part of the series of events Metamorphoses of Cocoa: Society, Economics, Culture.
