Forget the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag! The climax for one Japanese language student’s stay in Berlin was...ice cream. It may be hard to believe, but the young woman ate ice cream here for the first time in her life. Nonetheless, she also enjoyed wandering the city’s streets with her girlfriends, albeit under close observation. Together with the renowned Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, the Goethe-Institut had conceived a joint project in which three students of the Ostkreuz graduating class accompanied language students through the city. Nadja Ritter, Daniel Seiffert and Thomas Lobenwein documented the Goethe-Institut students as they moved through Berlin and thereby created – in over one hundred photos – a living photo album of the dialogue between cultures. This dialogue is the daily routine in the 13 Goethe-Instituts in Germany, language courses experienced more interest this year than ever before.
