Books for children and young people not only lay the foundations for future generations of readers. They also impart experiences, ideas and perspectives with which young people would not be confronted in their own environment and society without reading these books.
The Goethe-Institut holds workshops for authors and illustrators of children’s books in many countries. What is the outcome? What topics are important in different parts of the world? With which questions should children be confronted? What things are taboo? What do children learn through books from different cultures?
These questions are discussed by Marwa Al Aqroubi, president of the United Arab Emirates Board on Books for Young People, author and illustrator Jutta Bauer, Patricia Hansel, who is literary editor for the Takatuka publishing house in Barcelona, and Balsam Saad, head publisher at Al-Balsam, a publisher of Egyptian books for children and young people.
