Brazil has been investing heavily in culture for several decades, one key investment being an exemplary cultural sponsoring system unrivalled in South America. Now the country is harvesting the fruits of this far-sighted policy in the form of outstanding artistic achievements, which are internationally respected. But what status do artists have in society, particularly in a situation of upheaval as we are currently experiencing in Brazil?
Taking part in the discussion are dancer and choreographer Ismael Ivo, cultural journalist, TV and radio presenter Patricia Palumbo, and artist, film-maker and author Nuno Ramos.
On the same subject, Steidl Verlag publishing house has recently released the volume “Positions 6 – contemporary artists from Brazil“, edited by the Goethe-Institut and the Academy of Arts, Berlin.
