...was the slogan for a workshop hold in Kano in December 2008: Daveman, a German-Nigerian Reggae-/Dancehall artist from Berlin, composed and produced together with selected Kano artists three brandnew songs within just six days. They were presented to an enthusiastic Kano audience in a well attended concert (approx. 1,700 viewers).Esterina Petrauschke-Biyaga has documented the production process and the first big event organized by the newly opened Kano Liaison Office of the Goethe-Institut Nigeria with her camera.

In Beit Hakerem, a suburb of Jersualem, once a month a group meets to share and discuss their poems which they write in German. Few are younger than 85. But more and more young Israelis, too, take up learning German. The film explores both, intense and painful personal experience as well as – not altogether ingenuous - curiosity.

A workshop for curators in Jakarta
In March, 2006, the Goethe-Institut Jakarta and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) jointly hosted a workshop in "curatorial practice" in Jakarta and Bandung. The aim of the workshop was to encourage curatorial exchange between Asia and Europe against the background of developments in contemporary art. One result of the meeting was the establishment of the regional art platform "Art ConneXions."

In March 2007, the filmmaker and filmologist Birgit Hein travelled to Shanghai, the 'city across the sea' at the invitation of the German general consulate’s culture and education section. There she and her daughter Nina Hein, who was her camerawoman, made a film in which they recorded striking images of the 'city of light'.

The German Culture Slot from Barcelona
Every second weekend the local television channel Barcelona Televisió/B.TV broadcasts the German Culture Slot, a short programme in German with Catalan subtitles which features the latest news on German cultural events in the Barcelona region. After broadcasting, each programme can be downloaded from the Goethe Institute Barcelona’s homepage. This short film shows the wide range of topics featured in the programme and also gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of the production process.

Awards ceremony, 22 March, Weimar
Every year on 22 March, the anniversary of Goethe’s death, the Goethe Medals awards ceremony is held in Weimar. The Medals – which are recognised as official decorations of the Federal Republic of Germany – are awarded by the Goethe Institute to honour exemplary individuals who have made a special contribution to intercultural dialogue. The prize-winners in 2007 were the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim (Israel), the theatre director and songwriter Min’ Gi Kim (South Korea), and the translator and writer Dezső Tandori (Hungary).

A German-Indian writers-in-residence project
The word akshar means "letter of the alphabet" or simply "alphabet" in Sanskrit. The Goethe Institut and the German literary foundation Netzwerk der Literaturhäuser felt it would be an appropriate name for the German-Indian writers-in-residence project that they ran in 2006, seeing it as a symbol for trust in language and its elementary power. Between June and October of that year, seven Indian and seven German authors swapped countries, recording their impressions and experiences in their diaries.

In October 2006, the European Public Library was opened at the Goethe Institute in Rome. The library was created thanks to intensive cooperation between the Biblioteche di Roma, Rome’s public library service, eleven Rome-based foreign institutions active in the field of intercultural exchange (The Hungarian Academy, the cultural section of the French embassy, the cultural section of the Dutch embassy, the cultural section of the Swiss embassy, the Swiss Cultural Institute, the British Council, the Austrian Cultural Forum Rome, the Goethe Institute, Instituto Cervantes, the Polish Cultural Institute, the Slovakian Cultural Institute) and the representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament in Italy.A report by Marzio Marzot & Cristina Rajola,

Sisters Keepers and Microphone Mafia in Rome
During the first six months of Germany's presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Goethe Institut organized a large number of projects aimed at highlighting the idea of cultural diversity in various different ways. One of these projects took place in Ostia, near Rome, where hip hop musicians conducted an international workshop. In the course of the workshop they passed on some of their technical and musical skills to the predominantly young participants.

With the Biermösl Blosn in Africa
In spring 2007 the Bavarian satirical cabaret group “Biermösl Blosn” undertook a tour of South Africa and Namibia. The tour received funding and support from the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg. These clips from Peter Heller’s film show the intercultural dialogue which took place when Bavarian satire (including Schuhplattler dancing) met local musicians and gumboot dancers.

The language work of the Goethe Institut
The concept of "Language as the Basis for Integration" is playing a central role in the process of European unification. As part of an ongoing Turkish-German project, Turkish religious attachés and district administrators are participating in German courses at the Goethe-Institut in Ankara, Berlin and Schwäbisch Hall. In addition to their language classes, the participants also attend supplementary classes on German culture provided by the Goethe Institut and do internships with German local authorities, where they gain useful insights into the workings of German local government administration.

A European woman in Shanghai
A European woman seems to be severely overwhelmed by her impressions on the streets of Shanghai. While she perceives herself as moving forward, her surroundings – people, bikes, cars – seem to be moving backwards. Only after she has made the acquaintance of a Chinese man who consciously adopts her perspective does she gradually become familiar with this strange new place. Translation Possible shows how language barriers impede mutual understanding and coming to terms with an alien culture.

At the invitation of the Goethe Institut, Cologne choreographer Gerda König traveled to São Paulo with several members of her dance company "DIN A 13." The aim of the project was to establish a new mixed-abled dance company. The film shows the artistic process involved in the creation of a new work which questions the audience's received perceptions of physical normality by confronting them with a variety of images – some beautiful, some disturbing.

In spring 2007, director Christoph Schlingensief staged Richard Wagner's opera "The Flying Dutchman" at the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest. The production was put on as part of the German-Brazilian cultural exchange program which took place to mark the eleventh Amazonas Opera Festival. It was supported by the Goethe Institut São Paulo in cooperation with the organization Associação de Amigos da Cultura, and was sponsored by the German government's cultural foundation Kulturstiftung des Bundes.

A cell phone theater project, Calcutta-Berlin
Call Cutta is a play with a difference. Instead of receiving a numbered ticket at the box office, each member of the audience is issued a cell phone and then ushered back out onto the street. From here on in, an unknown voice is in control of events. This cell phone theater project was devised and staged by Gruppe Rimini Protokoll – Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel – in Berlin and Calcutta.

The world premiere of the Moldovan play "Antidot" (Antidote)
Hardened towards violence, weapons, and war, with killing as a means of political manipulation: "Antidot" (Antidote) by Moldovan playwright Nicoleta Esinencu presents a dark, sombre world after the Wall came down. "Antidot", world premiered in November 2008 and staged by the author herself at the Mobile European Trailer Theatre in Chisinau, was the first world premiere in the "After the Fall" project. In this project, Goethe Institutes in 15 European countries have commissioned 18 playwrights to produce works reflecting social and political changes in their own countries. Here, Nicoleta Esinencu talks about her homeland, her play and the possibility of staging works with a political message in Moldova.

The world premiere of the bosnian play "Mousefuckers" in Sarajevo.
Sarajevo, 14 years on, after the war. Judging by outward appearances, it seems a very peaceful city – but the experience of war remains ever present. In the play "Mousefuckers" the bosnian author Almir Imširević depicts the clash between “homeless” Yugoslavs in the exile of 21st century. They are casualties, ill people without identities, simply vegetating their lives away without the slightest power to resist . “Mousefuckers”, premiered on 25. April at the historic War Theater in Sarajevo, is the fourth production in the scope of the theatre project “After the Fall”. In this project, Goethe Institutes in 15 European countries have commissioned 18 playwrights to produce works reflecting social and political changes in their own countries. A portrait of a performance – and a city.
