Theatre and Dance

The performing arts are highly appreciated around the world. Through its diverse activities, the Goethe-Institut contributes to enabling encounters and discussion abroad with theatre and dance from Germany. The focus is given to acting, contemporary dance, performance, theatre for children and young people, puppet and marionette theatre as well as modern German theatre.

The Theatre and Dance Division acts as an advisor and impulse generator for a variety of projects in the fields of the performing arts, which are held or funded by the Goethe-Instituts abroad. A continuous dialogue generates programmes that convey insights into current German theatre and dance, stimulate artistic discourse and facilitate personal encounters between artists at home and abroad.

Besides arranging performances by German artists abroad, promoting young talent and residencies abroad as well as offering scholarships to Germany, the Goethe-Institut also supports guest appearances in Germany by outstanding ensembles from developing and transition countries, working in close collaboration with German festivals and organizing committees.

The division is given support with regards to content by a voluntary advisory board made up of renowned figures from the German theatre and dance scene.
