The Social Science Research Center Berlin is Europe's largest social science institute. Here, approximately 150 German and foreign scientists conduct problem-oriented basic research that is often long-term and primarily internationally comparative in scope.
Economists, sociologists, political scientists, legal experts and historians study modern societies' development trends, adjustment problems and innovation opportunities. The WZB concentrates on problem areas that especially affect society. The central question is the extent to which societal and state institutions are able to produce solutions to these problems. The WZB is financed by the federal government and the state of Berlin. It is a member of the Leibniz Association and cooperates closely with Berlin's universities.
