The IZA is a private, independent economic research institute that analyses structures and problems relating to labour both in Germany and internationally. It regards itself as an international research institute and place for communication between research, policy and practice. Within the frameworks of seven main research areas that all cover essential aspects of labour economy, the IZA conducts both international basic research as well as policy consultation on current issues and problems in the labour market. At the same time, it makes its information available to the wider public.
The IZA cooperates closely with the University of Bonn's Department of Economics, but also works with many external economists. In addition, the IZA is actively involved in international research networks. As a non-profit limited-liability company, it is supported by research sponsorship by the Deutsche Post Stiftung (German Postal Foundation).
