The DIPF is a non-university research service facility whose main tasks are information and research in the area of education. The DIPF supports research, practice, management and policy in education and conducts its own research at the same time.

The DIPF regards itself as a multi-disciplinary forum for national and international academic discourse on quality in education as well as a national competence centre for providing information on education. The Leibniz Institute for Education Research and Educational Information is a member of the Leibniz Association, to which 84 non-university research institutes and research service facilities belong. It is jointly supported by the federal government and the states.
