The GWZO of the University of Leipzig researches the history and culture of Eastern Central Europe from the early Middle Ages to the present in comparative perspectives. Currently, approximately 50 researchers from Germany and abroad are active in several centre research projects. In its research activities, the GWZO relies on a dense network of cooperative relations with research institutes in Eastern Central Europe, other parts of Europe, and overseas.
The GWZO receives basic funding from the State of Saxony, project funding is currently primarily secured through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
