© MZES The MZES is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Mannheim. In cooperation with the Department of Social Sciences, it is dedicated to researching societal, social and political development in Europe. Focal points are comparative research on Europe and investigation of the European process of integration. Its goals are long-term basic research, cooperation with similar institutions and education and training of young researchers.

The MZES's research is organised in two research areas: the area "European societies and their integration" deals with social structures and social inequality, the development of the welfare state and changes in family relationships as well as migration and integration. "European political systems and their integration" deals with the EU's political system. Thematic areas such as political participation, voter behaviour, political parties and electoral systems play important roles here. In addition to basic funding from the State of Baden-Württemberg, the centre is mainly externally funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation), foundations supporting academic research and EU-supported research promotion.
