The HIS deals with four themes: society of the German Federal Republic's, theory and history of violence, and nation and society. Representatives from a range of academic disciplines – in particular sociologists and historians – work in the areas of empirical social science research, historical analysis, and social science theory construction. The HIS regularly invites guest scholars and scientists, cooperates with other German and European institutions, and initiates numerous conferences, symposia and other events such as readings, panel discussions and exhibitions.
