The ILS – Institute for Regional and Urban Development is a non-university research institute for the spatial sciences committed to leading-edge competence. It studies urbanization processes and develops concepts for sustainable, future-oriented design for urban spaces in interdisciplinary and internationally comparative perspectives.
The ILS has taken over the research competences of the former departmental research facility ILS-North Rhine-Westphalia and is developing these further. It generates new knowledge within the framework of research and development projects, organises forums and events, publishes the findings of research studies and is active in a number of research networks and cooperative ventures. The ILS sees itself as a node in a diversity of research networks in the area of the spatial and civil engineering sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia as well as on Federal and European levels, in particular in cooperation with universities and other research institutions.
The ILS receives basic funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy, Building, Housing and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
