The Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GfÖ) focuses on a wide variety of issues. Included in its activities are research groups on the following themes: agrarian ecology, the role of theory in ecology, ecological systems research, genetic engineering and ecology, plant population biology, re-naturalisation ecology, and urban ecology.
The society's current members (approximately 1400) come from around the world, both from neighbouring European countries as well as from Australia and North and South America. The GfÖ organises conferences and workshops on all thematic areas relating to ecology. A selection of its publications is published in English as well, with the goal of improving scientific exchange and promoting and supporting environmental education and training in universities. In addition, the society communicates ecological concerns to the public.
