ZMO The Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is the only research institution in Germany that deals with the Near East, Africa, South and Southeast Asia from an interdisciplinary and historically comparative perspective. The center's research concentrates on predominantly Islamic societies and their relations with non-Islamic neighbouring regions.

The center's research programme currently comprises three interdisciplinary research groups and 30 research staff members dealing with aspects of the history and culture of the "modern Orient" since the 18th century. In addition, relations between the "modern Orient" and Europe and their perceptions of each other are being studied. The center's umbrella organisation is the Verein Geisteswissenschaftliche Zentren Berlin (Berlin Association of Humanistic Centres). Ongoing projects are primarily funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
