The IfM is a research and documentation institute belonging to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation that is active on a nationwide basis, providing services to museums in Germany in the areas of research, application-oriented communication and documentation. The institute cooperates with social, educational, natural and engineering scientists, and supplements the museum activities of the individual German federal states. In recent years, the institute has undergone a marked shift in emphasis in its points of concentration, from a primarily national to a European and international perspective. New tasks are arising for the IfM through the new media and overall structural changes (privatisation, new models of financing and responsibility). The Bureau for Provenance Investigation and Research is linked with the Institute.
