Who: Professional visual artists (including design, film, performance, media / sound, photography) based in Munich and the Munich city train (S-Bahn) area can apply beginning immediately.

Duration: 3 months – September to November 2020 

Closing date for applications: 31 October 2019  

As part of an exchange program, the Cultural Office of the State Capital of Munich, the Gwangju Museum of Art and the Goethe Institute offer a Munich-based artist a three-month stay as artist-in-residence in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. 

Current open call

3 months – September to November 2020. The stay takes place during the Gwangju Biennale. Adequate knowledge of the English or Korean language are expected.


Application documents are only to be submitted via E-Mail (please only PDF document form) and, due to the jury process, have to be written in German and English. The application should contain the following information: 
  • informative artist’s statement (no longer than 1 Din A4 page) in German and English 
  • CV in German and English
  • structured visual material
  • adequate knowledge of the English or Korean language

Jury and Selection procedure

A jury in Munich, consisting of a representative of the Cultural Office and external experts, selects three candidates and sends this pre-selection to the Gwangju Museum of Arts, which then makes the final selection.

  • living expenses in Gwangju for three months (€ 1,200 per month)

  • public presentation in the format of an "open studio" and a solo exhibition
