Artificial Intelligence in Online Language Classes at the Goethe-Institut

Possibilities and limitations in practical application

The Goethe Language Lab was set up nearly four years ago as a section for digital innovation at the Goethe-Institut’s main office in Munich. Its mission is to position the Goethe-Institut as a global provider of modern high-quality online language learning applications, which involves developing, testing and applying AI technologies in online foreign language learning.
This paper is about aspects of “AI in the Lab” that the Goethe Language Lab team are currently working on and what they have accomplished so far, as well as the special challenges involved in using various AI technologies to teach and learn German. In conclusion, I point out some potential uses of AI for language learning that could be developed at the Goethe-Institut and some AI technologies that the Goethe Language Lab will be exploring in future.

The Goethe Language Lab is an experimental space for digital innovation within the Goethe-Institut. Its interdisciplinary team’s mission is to develop the Goethe-Institut’s digital language-learning programme and to test sustainable technologies in this field. The Goethe Language Lab takes a heavily user-centred approach to developing products and services so as to allow for learners’ changing needs and habits in the digital age.
