Accomodation
Competitors stay in the youth hostel. They are separated into girls’ and boys’ areas, where they share a room between three to four students, occasionally five. All rooms are furnished the same and have an en-suite bathroom. The young people and chaperones from Freiburg, who also stay in the youth hostel, are given breakfast, lunch and evening meals there.
The accompanying teachers are accommodated in the city centre in a very attractive hotel, from which it is a short walk to the Goethe-Institut.
The youth hostel is in a picturesque green setting, on the banks of the river Dreisam. It takes 30 minutes to reach the city centre by tram. The Robert Bosch College, where the actual competition for the young people is being held, is just 10 minutes’ walk from the youth hostel.
Of course, all IDO visitors will be introduced to the beautiful Goethe-Institut in Freiburg. The accompanying teachers will hold some of their workshops there, the young people will visit for one-off events.
Timeline
After the official welcome for IDO participants on Monday 16th July, the preparation phase for the language competition itself begins. All students take part in a variety of workshops, which prepare them well for the tasks ahead. From the middle of the first week the German learners then spend mornings and afternoons at the Robert Bosch College. They are guided by chaperones as they compose the work for presentation to the jury later.
Later in the afternoon or after dinner there is a varied programme of leisure activities – or sometimes just free time to relax or make new friends. A group outing for all students, accompanying teachers and chaperones is planned for the weekend. Where are they going? It’s a surprise…
