Interview with Johannes Ebert “Europe stands for freedom, justice and cultural diversity”
The year 2016 was marked by international crises, displacement and restrictions to free speech. The Goethe-Institut is meeting these global challenges. An Interview with Johannes Ebert, the Secretary-General of the Goethe-Institut.
“Europe stands for freedom, justice and cultural diversity. When these values come under pressure, we, as the Goethe-Institut, must demonstrate our position. Our Goethe-Instituts in Europe enjoy trust and are extensively networked in their host countries. Together with our partners, we are committed to taking responsibility for Europe”, says Johannes Ebert. He also emphasizes the importance of displacement for the Goethe-Institut, saying, “Support for refugees remains a major task for the Goethe-Institut. We want to contribute to ensuring that no lost generation is arising.”
A focus will be on an efficient expansion of its network, a structural transformation driven by digitalization and the genuine strengths of the Goethe-Institut: language and culture as the keys to dialogue.
