History from a Spray Can
Belgrade: The young man whose head adorns this wall was named Gavrilo Princip. He became famous for a momentous deed: 100 years ago, the Bosnian Serb shot the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in Sarajevo. The assassination triggered the First World War. In Serbia, many still honour Princip as a national hero. During research for their documentary play Battlefield Remembrance, artists Hans Werner Kroesinger and Regine Dura constantly encountered Princip – as a graffiti icon as well as the name giver for schools and streets.
