AFRICAN FUTURES

Panel discussion with Lauren Beukes, Smangele Mathebula and Angela Wachuka | Chaired by: Sean O’Toole

Europe and the world are looking increasingly towards Africa at the moment – but the continent’s future tends to be portrayed in extreme terms: as either a gloomy apocalyptic vision or a booming investment paradise. But how do artists, creators of culture and scientists view the future? Do they offer alternative visions to the widespread perspectives? These questions are the main focus of the publication African Futures, for which artists, academics and culture creators present their views on the subject of the future.

Lauren Beukes, author from South Africa, Smangele Mathebula (South Africa), co-founder of the interactive book initiative Dibookeng in Soweto, as well as Angela Wachuka, curator of African Futures in Kenya, discuss this theme; chaired by: Sean O'Toole, co-editor of the publication African Futures.
