The Relevance of the Beautiful, today

Gadamer’s forty year old deliberations on “The Relevance of the Beautiful” serve as a starting point for looking at problems with the beautiful today. Things have become puzzlingly quiet where “the beautiful” is concerned, while aesthetics and all that is aesthetic seem to be undergoing an everlasting boom. Does contemporary art still have and need a concept and a practical application of “the beautiful” – and conversely is contemporary art absolutely necessary in order to experience beauty? And how could beauty and contemporary art be linked back together in discussion?

Christoph Bartmann has been executive director at the Goethe-Institut New York since 2011. His book Leben im Büro. Die schöne neue Welt der Angestellten (Life at the office. The beautiful new world of the employee) (Hanser) was published in 2012.
