Mathias Spahlinger

Mathias Spahlinger is a composer. His compositions play out in the area of tension encompassing the most diverse musical influences and style directions: Spahlinger’s works portray conflicts for which there are no defined models as such, between Renaissance and jazz, between musique concrète and Weberesque minimalism, between sound, improvisation and notation, between aesthetic autonomy and political consciousness. He was professor of composition and music theory at the Karlsruhe Conservatoire from 1984 to 1990 and he then took over a professorship of composition and the directorship of the Institute of New Music at the Freiburg Conservatoire. Mathias Spahlinger is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and was awarded the Berlin Art Prize in 2014.
