Rediscovered – Africa’s pop music of the 1970s
Africa’s pop music of the 1970s – Postcolonial appropriation or late salvation for tradition?
The musical treasures from independent Africa of the 1970s are in demand worldwide today and more and more bands outside Africa are being inspired by this music.
Berlin’s Omniversal Earkestra journeyed to Mali in 2019 to meet West Africa’s 1970s legends of pop and jazz music. The result has just been released on their terrific album ‘Le Mali 70’. The project raises many interesting questions about dealing with Mali’s history: Does ‘Le Mali 70’ pursue post-colonial appropriation? Can the same accusation be made about the cooperation between Berlin and Mali when record collectors hear it and begin buying up rare vinyl records in Africa until there are no more? What does a successful music exchange look like? How does Mali itself deal with its history and cultural heritage? What do musicians in Mali think of such projects and encounters?
