Qatar Germany 2017
Seeing Doha through a photographer’s lense
Qatar Museums, the German Embassy Doha and the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region have invited German photographers to Doha for a mutual exchange with Qatari photographers.
The annual photographers exchange is a constant part of the cultural year with the respective guest country, organized by Qatar Museums. In 2017 the exchange takes place under the title “Reflections” focusing on the “Periphery” of both countries. “Periphery” meaning here not only the area outside of the metropolis as i.e. the desert in Qatar or rural areas in Germany. It also refers to cultural aspects outside the mainstream and to the photographers’ particular individual interests. This will enable the German and Qatari photographers to ask questions in their host countries and refer them back to their own societies.
A lecture on photography at the Doha Fire Station on 11 February 2017 was the onset of the exchange program. In a public presentation and networking event renowned German photographer Jordis Schlösser presented her own works and 25 years of works of the renowned photographers’ agency “Ostkreuz”. “Photography in my eyes is aimed to discover the familiar in the unfamiliar, the common in the specific, the self in the other,“ she explained.
Later on the two German photographers Louisa Summer and Gregor Schmidt who participate in the Qatari-German Photographers Exchange met with professional photographers and photography enthusiasts. Gregor Schmidt explained his personal view on the exchange, "It is important to me not to depict facts in my photography, but to raise questions through my pictures. What awaits for example Qatar, a land between tradition and modernity that has set off towards the future?"
