September 26 is the
European Day of Languages, as proclaimed by the Council of Europe on December 6, 2001.
There have never been more opportunities to live, work or study in a European country, but lack of language competence prevents many people from taking advantage of them.
Globalization and patterns of business ownership mean that citizens increasingly need foreign language skills to work effectively within their own countries.
Europe is rich in languages - there are over 200 European languages and many more are spoken by citizens whose family origin is from other continents. This is an important resource to be recognized, used and cherished.
Language learning brings benefits to young and old - you are never too old to learn a language and to enjoy the opportunities it opens up. Even if you only know a few words of the language of the country that you visit (for example on holiday), this enables you to make new friends and contacts.
Learning other peoples' languages is a way of helping us to understand each other better and overcome our cultural differences.
Activities:
- Raffle draw with the opportunity of winning free courses at the Goethe-Institut, British Council, Alliance Française in Abu Dhabi.
- Enjoy traditional food from different European Countries (Weisswurst from Germany, Croissants from France, Bamkuch from Luxembourg; Sandwiches from Denmark; and Biscuits from the UK… All our goodies are halal)
- “Speak Dating”: You learn two or three phrases for three minutes, get a stamp in your "European Language Passport", and then move on to the next language booth. You will win small prizes after successfully finishing your language session. In the process you will also be able to gather more information about the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe and where to study the European language you like.
