70 years of DEFA

Goethe-Institut Melbourne

Sunny lives in a drab building block in Berlin. Her unapologetic way of living distracts and annoys the other tenants. The resolute young woman performs as a singer in a small scale band. Together, they tour through small towns and villages. The ever recurring routine of her life and the unvarying conversations bore her. Sunny herself aims for individual acknowledgment and happiness. When she meets unconventional Ralf, who is a philosophy student, she falls in love with him.

Konrad Wolf directs this DEFA classic starring Renate Krößner as the yearning and rebellious Sunny.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of DEFA, which was East Germany’s main film company, the German Language Meetup group is screening Solo Sunny on September 29, 2016. Doors open at 6.30pm at The Backlot Studios Cinema and the entrance fee is $20.00.
