A film by Werner Herzog

Riverside Theatre

When legendary writer and adventurer Bruce Chatwin was dying of AIDS, he called his friend and collaborator Werner Herzog, giving him a parting gift: the rucksack that accompanied him around the world while traveling. 30 years later, carrying Chatwin’s rucksack, Herzog sets out on his own journey, inspired by their shared passion for the nomadic life. Along the way, Herzog uncovers stories of lost tribes, wanderers and dreamers. From Patagonia to the gorgeous landscapes of Wales and the Australian outback – where Chatwin wrote one of his most famous books, The Songlines – Nomad traces Chatwin's lifelong obsession with how we and our ancestors have sought to make sense of our place in the world. Told in Werner Herzog’s inimitable style, full of memorable characters and encounters, Nomad is a portrait of one of the 20th century’s most charismatic writers, as well as a fascinating insight into Herzog’s own obsessions and imagination.
