Scholarships for Language Courses and Seminars in Germany

Commencing monthly between January and December 2024.

Approx. 2 – 3 weeks

75 teaching units of 45 minutes, 15 days of lessons

Berlin, Dresden, and Freiburg. Further information on course locations is available here. 

Please note: We can currently only offer accommodation in the above course locations. Preferred course location of applicant will be taken into consideration but cannot be guaranteed. 

- Teachers of German in primary and secondary schools in Australia who feel the need to improve their German language skills.
- University students currently enrolled in a Diploma of Education course in Australia and aspiring to be teachers of German.
- Librarians managing the Goethe-Institut’s Resource Centres.
- Principals and persons in key positions in education with a good basic knowledge of German.

- You are an Australian citizen or have been a permanent resident of Australia for at least two years and you are committed to remain in Australia.
- You belong to the target group.
- You are committed to teaching German in Australia in the years to come. 
- You have not received a scholarship to the Federal Republic of Germany in the last two years.
- You are prepared to take part in the entire course, including the cultural program.
- You can state that you are available for the dates of all of the desired seminars you indicate.
- You confirm that you have been informed that it is not always possible to prioritize your desired course location.
- You acknowledge that the Goethe-Institut cannot provide any organizational assistance or help with insurance matters for family members or friends.
- You acknowledge that we advise against participating in a language course during a pregnancy to avoid the risk of complications for which no insurance coverage is available.
- You are willing to write a short report about the scholarship (1-2 pages) on completion of the course detailing if:
a) the experience improved your language proficiency.
b) the experience improved your knowledge of German culture.
c) you would recommend the program to others.

The scholarship includes:
- tuition for a Goethe-Institut Intensive German course (75 teaching units, 15 or 16 days of lessons, approx. 2-3 weeks) plus a social and cultural program
- accommodation in single room including breakfast (in a Goethe-Institut guesthouse or with a private host, depending on course location) for the duration of the course (not redeemable as cash)
- one main meal on course days (not Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays)
- a travel allowance of €1000
- basic health, accident and liability insurance for the duration of the course (arrival day to departure day; does not cover pre-existing health issues & pregnancy)

Primary, secondary & tertiary teachers of German with a good knowledge of German and a good knowledge and experience with German methodology and didactics. For required language levels, please refer to prerequisites for each seminar description. 

- You are an Australian citizen or have been a permanent resident of Australia for at least two years and you are committed to remain in Australia.
- You belong to the target group.
- You will be working as a teacher of German or a teacher trainer in the coming years.
- You agree to pass on what you learn in the seminar to your colleagues. 
- You have the necessary German language skills for the type of seminar you wish to attend.
- You are prepared to take part in the entire seminar, including the cultural program.
- You can confirm that you are available for the dates of all of the desired seminars you indicate.
- You understand that you have been informed that it is not always possible to prioritize your three desired seminars.
- You acknowledge that the Goethe-Institut cannot provide any organizational assistance or help with insurance matters for family members or friends.
- You acknowledge that we advise against participating in a seminar during a pregnancy to avoid the risk of complications for which no insurance coverage is available.
- You are willing to write a short report about the scholarship (1-2 pages) on completion of the seminar detailing if:
a) the experience broadened your teaching skill set.
b) the experience improved your knowledge of German culture.
c) you would recommend the program to others.

The scholarship includes:
- all seminar fees, as well as costs for excursions or cultural programs.
- accommodation in single room including breakfast (in a Goethe-Institut guesthouse or with a private host, depending on course location) for the duration of the seminar (not redeemable as cash).
- one main meal (lunch) on course days (not Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays).
- a travel allowance of 1000€ (excluding seminars of one week duration and blended learning format with one-week in-person seminar in Germany).
- basic health, accident and liability insurance for the duration of the course (arrival day to departure day; does not cover pre-existing health issues & pregnancy).

1. Check first with your school authority (eg. DET, AIS, Catholic Education etc.) if they will have to approve an application first and what the necessary steps are.

3. ​Complete all parts of the form on pages 1-3 only.

4. After completing the form, save it again on your own computer. Please save the file name in the following format: Country_LastName_FirstName.pdf

5.Send the form together with a letter of support from your principal by 15 October 2023 to: education-melbourne@goethe.de
