Terms and Conditions  - Language Courses

1. General Requirements

1.1 Participants in general and special language courses must be at least 18 years of age. Different conditions apply for children’s and teen courses.

1.2 New students, other than those enrolled for A1.1, will be asked to complete our placement test. This will enable us to place you in the appropriate course for your level and we will advise you of this by telephone or email.

2. Terms of Payment

2.1   Enrolments are accepted by online registration, email, in person or over the phone - on a first come, first serve basis. Course fees must be paid in full before commencement of the course. An enrolment confirmation will be emailed to you after payment has been received. A receipt will also be provided.

2.2   If full payment is not received by the due date, the participant loses their right to participate. In such cases, the Goethe-Institut (hereafter referred to as “GI”) retains its entitlement to the course fee.

2.3   We accept payment by bank transfer, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card), PayPal (only for Sydney) and cash. The course fees include 10% GST.

3. Course fees

3.1 The contractually binding fee is the fee stated in the price list current at the time of application.

3.2 To receive the Early-Bird discount, students must enrol in and pay for a course before the Early-Bird discount deadline (as stated on the course finder). To receive the Early-Bird discount after office hours, students must complete the online application or send through an enrolment form before 12 am that day.

3.3 At the start of the term, every student is able to receive a stamp on their Goethe Liebling Loyalty card upon request. At the completion of three consecutive terms, course participants will be eligible for a 25% discount on their fourth course. It is the students responsibility to get their Goethe-Liebling Loyalty card stamped at the front desk. Please mention that you would like to receive the discount from your Goethe-Liebling Loyalty card at the time of enrolment. You will not be entitled to retrospectively reclaim a discount.

3.4 Discounts cannot be combined (Loyalty Card, Student, Senior, Early Bird, Siblings).

4. Cancellation and refunds

4.1 The following conditions apply if the course participant is unable to take part in the course:
Applications for withdrawals from a course must be received in writing up to 5 business days before the start of the course. The GI will withhold $50 of the course fee. No cancellation will be allowed after course commencement. It is not possible to confer a course or a part of a course to a third party or the next term. No refunds are possible for students who miss one or more classes.

4.2 If enrolments are insufficient on the starting date, we reserve the right to cancel or postpone the course. In this case we will offer the participants the opportunity to move to another course or to receive a full refund of the course fee. We regret that we can only conduct courses that have the minimum number of participants by the end of the enrolment period. To avoid cancellations of courses, we advise students to register before the Early-Bird deadline.

5. Course level assignment / class size

5.1 Placement in course levels is based on the placement test conducted by the GI.

5.2 Our courses have at least 7 and at most 18 participants. If enrolments are insufficient on the starting date, we shorten the teaching times. The 10-week courses will be reduced as follows:
  • 6 course participants: course is reduced by 4 TU
  • 5 course participants: course is reduced by 8 TU.
The Superintensive Courses will be reduced as follows:
  • 6 course participants: course is reduced by 3,5 TU
  • 5 course participants: course is reduced by 7 TU.
The VCE/HSC High School Courses will be reduced as follows:
  • 6 course participants: course is reduced by 2 TU
  • 5 course participants: course is reduced by 4 TU.
The Intensive Courses will be reduced as follows:
  • 6 course participants: course is reduced by 4 TU
  • 5 course participants: course is reduced by 8 TU

Classes with less than 5 course participants will only run after discussion with prospective students. The smaller class sizes provide more personal attention and therefore students will progress through the course material at a faster rate. The course fee remains the same for smaller classes.

6. Course Transfers

Transfers into another level will only be considered in the first week of course commencement, after discussion with the course-coordinator.

7. Public Holidays

No classes are held on public holidays in Victoria or New South Wales. Replacement sessions will be added on at the end of the course.

8. Responsibilities of participants

Participants are obliged to comply with the course rules and house rules applicable to the GI.

9. Liability of the Goethe-Institut

The liability of GI and its staff is limited to intent and gross negligence. The GI also accepts no liability for the cancellation of its services due to force majeure (e.g. natural disasters, fire, floods, war, official orders and all other circumstances beyond the control of the contractual parties).

10. Lockdown Regulations

Blended Learning Standard Courses face to face and online

For those of you looking for the most face-to-face time with other students and our teachers, this is your best option. Our Blended Learning Courses consist of 50% virtual or face to face group meetings, and 50% flexible online learning, guided and monitored by your tutor. With our sophisticated virtual classroom platform, online live meetings can be just as interactive as meeting at the institute. The group meetings will take place online until in-person classes can continue safely at the Goethe-Institut.

Online Group Courses

These courses are designed to run online for the full duration of each level, and they are more intensive than Blended Learning Standard Online Courses. There are five virtual online group meetings and you will be working more independently in this format compared to Blended Learning Courses. Nonetheless, your progress is monitored closely and you will be well supported by your teacher throughout the whole course.

Learning is an individual process. How much time you need to attain a certain level depends on a variety of individual factors: your commitment, time allocated to your learning, and how much you take advantage of additional practice resources.

If you have already studied one or more languages, you may learn German faster. It is recommended that you participate in a language course in your home country or in Germany, where you will be exposed to the German language outside the classroom.

It depends also on the intensity of the instruction (intensive vs. evening courses, for example). We suggest that you consult the testing location of your choice and request a personal consultation.
Course and exam fees must be paid in full before commencement of the course or exam. We accept:
