Berlin-based artist in Australia

Young Berlin-based artist Fabian Knecht will be in Australia for the first time. As part of NiteArt 2017 Knecht will present the concept to his recent series of work called Isolation. Workshops, discussions and symposiums will be organized. As a highlight Knecht will give a Perfomative Lecture in the Forum Theatre Art West of Melbourne University. He will talk about his project Isolation and his most recent work Split, which he made during his stay in Australia.

Staging several fictitious enactments Knecht questions the natural formation of the seperated rocks in Devils Marble Conservation Reserve with his work Split. He claims them to be a land art intervention created by the artist himself.

With his series Isolation Fabian Knecht tries to approach art in a new way. He wants to carry the exhibition space into reality rather than, as it is customary, exhibit an isolated little part of reality in a gallery. The white wall of the gallery seems to be an integral part of contemporary art. Therefore Fabian Knecht works with a huge, hollow, white cube to extract or embrace a certain part of nature. Through the usage of the ‘White Cube’ everything in its middle becomes art. Nature is displayed as art that is based within its own reality. For him such subjects were for instance a part of a riverbed in Ukraine, of a frozen lake in Vladivostok or of a rubbish tip in Berlin.

NiteArt 2017 returns this year on the July 27 and many different galleries all over Melbourne open their doors. From 6pm onwards guests can admire exhibitions of diverse contemporary artists.
Deborah Stahle founded NiteArt in 2013. The not-for-profit organization aims to make contemporary art more accessible to a new and broader audience. In close collaboration with the City of Melbourne, University of Melbourne as well as Open House Melbourne a multifarious program was developed which Fabian Knecht gives a German component for the first time. The full program of NiteArt 2017 will be launched in June.

Fabian Knecht's lecture performance will take place on July 27, 20.00 in the Forum Theatre Art West.
