Juliane Lorenz, president of the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation, gives insights into the cult director’s world. As a special guest of the Goethe-Institut she visits Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane during the Fassbinder Retrospective.

“I can sleep when I’m dead.” - Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-82) is one of the most polarising and influential figures of the New German Cinema. As a director, producer, actor, and author he left a comprehensive oeuvre. He was only 39 years old when he died. However, with an incredible creativity, he produced hundreds of works, including film scripts, theatre plays and writings, song texts, and essays in only fifteen years. Until today, Fassbinder is controversially discussed.

As president of the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation, it is Juliane Lorenz’ task to preserve Fassbinder’s heritage. With offices in Berlin and New York, the foundation is restoring Fassbinder’s films, initiating retrospectives and exhibitions, as well as promoting and supporting developments in film and theatre. Lorenz is working in the film and theatre business since the seventies and was Fassbinder’s long-time partner and editor in his later career. Together they produced film classics such as Berlin Alexanderplatz and The Marriage of Maria Braun.

In Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne Juliane Lorenz will participate in different screenings and talk about her time with Fassbinder as well as his life and work.

Presented by the Sydney Film Festival, the ACMI X in Melbourne, and the QAGOMA in Brisbane. Juliane Lorenz’ Tour is organised and supported by the Goethe-Institut.
