Local event in Brussels: Espace Fxmme
This year's Freiraum Festival will take place from 19 to 20 November.
The Freiraum Festival & Summit is a collaborative event. Μore than 20 institutions around Europe join forces to explore, reflect and react to the recent global crisis. The themes are connected to the state of freedom in Europe (the ongoing biopolitical democrisis and the emergence of social movements and solidarities), and the State of the Arts (new formats and audiences).
Next to a live-streamed programme of talks, discussions and artistic interventions with established thinkers such as a.o. Silvia Federici and Athena Athanasiou, partner institutions organise local events addressing issues particular to their physical localities and audiences. Please check the full program

In this framework, the Goethe-Institut Brussels joins forces with Globe Aroma, a Brussels based artistic work- & meeting space for artists, co-creators and art enthusiast with a background as newcomer. One of the co-creation projects that Globe Aroma is initiating is called Espace Fxmme -Womxn Space: created shortly before the pandemic, a time-based platform that takes place every Thursday at Globe Aroma.
It is a platform for female/non-binary artists and creatives to establish a safer space in an environment previously dominated by male presence. In the last year, within the framework of Espace Fxmme the project TALK WITH THE WALLS has been developed as a reflection, design exercise and action on how space best reflects Globe Aroma's values (intersectionality, solidarity, participation, creativity, inclusion and care). A.o. Espace Fxmme participants collaborated on the design of a multi-use modular furniture and a mural based on personal empowering stories. From October onwards, Espace Fxmme is going to work with different techniques and cultures of textiles design, aiming to create softer vessels of hospitality for the whole community. The participants of Espace Fxmme will share with Freiraum, observations of their experience from the overall trajectory, reflecting on the fragile balance of what it means to be free, safe or included.
The Espace Fxmme performance and presentation will take place on Nov 19th between 15 and 16:00. A live-stream of the event will be made available on the Freiraum platform.
Globe Aroma is an artistic work and meeting place for artists and art enthusiasts with a background as a newcomer. Globe Aroma, together with an artistic community and in alliance with the broad cultural field, builds mental and infrastructural space, in which visitors – individually or in co-creation – develop and discover artistic work, develop a network, share knowledge and practices with each other and share publicly.
Freiraum was initiated by the Goethe-Institut in 2017 and is now an independent network of more than 40 actors from culture, academia and civil society. The Freiraum Festival is organised in collaboration with a team of curators from the partner network and under the artistic direction of ArtBOX Creative Arts Management.
