Halaqat - Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world

After the Halaqat Opening Festival in December, we deepen our panorama on documentary film from the Arab world and invite you to two screenings on 14  in and 15 March the presence of the directors Dhyaa Khaled Joda (Iraq) and Hassen Ferhani (Algeria).

'DANCE WITH A BULLET' (2020, 55')

'Dance With a Bullet' is a documentary film — spanning over ten years — that tells two intertwined stories: that of Dhyaa Joda, a 23-year old Iraqi filmmaker, and that of Anmar Taha, a 19-year old Iraqi dancer. In 2004 Anmar was shot in Baghdad. As a result, in fear of his life, he fled Iraq. As did Dhyaa.  Since then — over the course of many years and in several countries — the filmmaker has continued to document the dancer.

Dhyaa Khalid Joda was born in 1979 in Baghdad. He studied cinema at the University of Fine Arts in Baghdad and worked for TV channels Aljazeera, Alarabya and Alhurra. He was also cameraman on the documentary film Operation Filmmaker by Nina Davenport. He left Baghdad in November 2005 and currently lives in Belgium.

The European project Halaqat is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. Halaqat is co-funded by the European Commission (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar.
