Die Verlassenen

For our 19th International Online Book Club meeting on 14 June, we have invited author Matthias Jügler to read his novel Die Verlassenen (The Abandoned Ones) with us.

ABOUT THE BOOK

What would you rather forget if you could? Johannes looks back on a troubled East German childhood: the early death of his mother, the mysterious disappearance of his father. All his questions about this remained unanswered, which is why he still cautiously gropes his way through life as an adult. A melancholic loner who has settled into a quiet existence. When Johannes comes across a letter, addressed to his father and sent only a few days before he left without a word, this find changes not only Johannes' future, but also his past as a child of the pre-reunification GDR. His memories undergo a profound transition and with them his view of his own life.
