Halaqat - Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world

Two talented musicians celebrate the encounter between East and West in this recital.

Lebanese pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha and French cellist Astrig Siranossian met at charity concerts in support of Lebanon after the Beirut harbour explosions of 4 August 2020. For this concert, in addition to the sublime Romance by Toufic El Bacha (Rahman's father) and pieces by Rahman himself, the duo plays a beautiful mix of Arab and European music. Ludwig van Beethoven, the famous Armenian composer Komitas Vardapet, Sergei Rachmaninoff and the Egyptian Mohamed Abdel Wahab - composer of Oum Kalthoum - are all part of their repertory.

Programme:
Abdel Rahman El Bacha - Variations sur un air égyptien
Mohamed Abdel Wahab - Ala Eh Bitloumi (arr. Abdel Rahman El Bacha)
Vardapet Komitas - Adaptations of traditional Armenian songs
Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata for cello and piano no. 4, op. 102/1
Abdel Rahman El Bacha - Nocturne et Romance
Toufic El Bacha - Romance
Sergei Rachmaninov - Sonata for cello and piano, op. 19

The European project Halaqat is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. Halaqat is co-funded by the European Commission (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar.
