Verzeichnis einiger Verluste © Suhrkamp

We are delighted to present the German author Judith Schalansky who will discuss her novel Verzeichnis einiger Verluste (An Inventory of Losses) at our online book club event. The discussion will be led by the Norwegian translator, Elisabeth Beanca Halvorsen.

"Nothing can be retrieved in writing, but everything can be experienced." Judith Schalansky's genre-defying novel, originally published in 2020 and translated into English by Jackie Smith, comprises twelve short stories dedicated to vanished natural and artistic objects such as the songs of Sappho, the demolished Palace of the Republic in Berlin, an extinct species of tiger, and a sunken island in the Pacific. The protagonists of these stories are characters on the sidelines, struggling against the inevitability of change, including the writer herself, who traces the gaps in the GDR's historical reresentation in the voids of her own childhood. Schalansky's work examines the phenomena of presence and absence, preservation and destruction. With a powerful narrative voice, she brings a selction of historical losses to life as the result of profound research and imaginative creation.

Hosting the discussion will be the Norwegian translator and acting president of the Norwegian Association of Literary Translators, Elisabeth Beanca Halvorsen. As well as having translated works by Judith Schalansky, Halvorsen has also translated  Elfriede Jelinek and Ralf Rothmann into Norwegian. She also writes her own novels.

All are welcome to take part in this live online event, which won't be recorded. You don't need to have read the book in advance, but you will need to have a good understanding of German. Participation is free of charge.
