Halaqat - Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world
After Egypt, Algeria, Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon, we head for Sudan and meet Marwa Zein with her debut 'Khartoum Offside' about the struggle of young female footballers to gain official recognition as the Sudanese women's national team. Discuss with the director after the film.
The screening takes place in the framework of the
Afropolitan Festival 2022 which will take place at Bozar from 26 to 29 May 2022. Under the theme of ‘Women Power’, this 5th edition celebrates the creative force of African and Afro-descendant women artists, but also their struggle to increase their freedom and widen their scope of action. .
'Khartoum Offside' (SD/NO/DK, 2019, DCP, 75')
A group of exceptional young ladies in Khartoum are determined to play football professionally. They are prepared to defy the ban imposed by Sudan’s Islamic Military government. Their battle to get officially recognized as Sudan’s Wowen’s National team is fearless, courageous and often laughable. But their struggle in unwavering. Through the intimate portrait of these women over a number of years we follow their moments of hope and deception. FIFA gives the national football federation financial assistance to help women's teams, but it continues to marginalise women's football. However, there is a new spark of hope when the elections within the federation could mean real change of the entire system.

Khartoum Offside was awarded Best Documentary by the 15th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). JCC awarded the film best 1st work by TV5 Monde, in addition to more international awards. The film premiered at Berlinale 2019 and was selected in Visions Du Reel, CPH DOX, Hot Docs and Sheffield & IDFA.
The European project Halaqat is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. Halaqat is co-funded by the European Commission (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar.
