Halaqat - Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world

What happens when you put together an international band with musicians from different European and Arab countries?

The Halaqat Impro Orchestra is the last part of an artistic music residency and the final chord an intense exchange between musicians who met only five days before. In the days leading up to the concert, they will experiment, co-create and exchange ideas in Werkplaats Walter, the pre-eminent place for experimental and avant-garde music.

The Goethe-Institut and Bozar have entrusted Amir ElSaffar with the task of guiding these great talents during their residency. The American composer, trumpeter, santur player, and singer of Iraqi origin is touted as an artist "perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between jazz and Arabic music" (The Wire) and as "one of the most promising figures in jazz today" (Chicago Tribune).

With:

The concert of the Halaqat Impro Orchestra will be followed by a set by Maurice Louca presenting "The Luck Hour" just next door in Bozar Studio. He is one of the most interesting figures in the flourishing Egyptian experimental scene.

The European project Halaqat is implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. Halaqat is co-funded by the European Commission (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar.
