On the last day of the exhibition “Trust Territories” by Albena Baeva Goethe-Institut Bulgaria invites you to an evening dedicated to the topic artificial intelligence and art.
The artist Albena Baeva will offer a guided tour through the exhibition, talking about the project developed in collaboration with Natalia Fuchs.

After that Daniel Szalai (Hungary) and Tobias Zimmer (Germany) will have an artist talk presenting their work and how do they work with machine learning and algorithms. They are both residents of the Generation A international residency, organized by Goethe-Institut in 12 European countries. They have spent one month in Sofia researching and collaborating with the Laboratory for CAD systems and AI at the Sofia Tech Park.

Following their presentations artist Krassimir Terziev will moderate a discussion with them and Albena Baeva, who also participates in another project for AI of Goethe-Institut Bulgaria, namely EthicAI=Labs which is an international laboratory format for researching and discussing ethical issues connected to machine learning.

The talks will take place in the backyard of the Goethe-Institut, which is also one of the virtual locations of the exhibition “Trust Territories”.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Tobias Zimmer (1990) is a German artist working with algorithms, carried out by machines as well as by humans. He studied Intermedia Design at the University of Applied Sciences Trier, followed by Media Art and Design (MFA) at Bauhaus-University Weimar. In his work, he deals with the question how algorithms are paralleled by repetitive behaviour and automatisms of human life. His work addresses how the quantification of daily experiences can be accompanied by a feeling of contentment and safety. The computer – as a programmed machine – plays a vital part in most of his works, though the outcome is frequently placed in the physical world.

Daniel Szalai (1991) is a Hungarian artist. His work investigates peculiar manifestations of human-animal relationships and reflects on societal, political and economic anomalies. He mixes different media in his artistic practice and also works with spatial installations. Szalai studied photography at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and he also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Design Theory. Szalai is a member of the Carte Blanche Collective. He lives and works in Budapest.

Albena Baeva works at the intersection of art, technology, and science. In her interactive installations, she uses ML and AI, physical computing, creative coding, and DIY practices. Albena has two MAs; in Restoration(2008) and Digital Arts(2010) from the National Academy of Art in Sofia. She won the “Everything Is Just Fine” commission by the Bulgarian Fund for Women (2019), the international Essl Art Award for contemporary art (2011), and the VIG Special Invitation (2011). Albena is co-founder of the Runabout project, a platform for new performance instruments, the studio for interactive design Reaktiv, and gallery Gallery. Her work has been shown in museums for contemporary art including Essl (Austria, 2011), EMMA (Finland, 2013), MCV Vojvodina (Serbia, 2015 and 2019), galleries and festivals for video and performance in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the USA.
