ART AND CULTURE ECHO IN THE CLOSING OF THE CONFERENCE

The last night of the event is marked by the launching of the collective exhibition and magazine, artistic performances, and musical presentations.

    Visitants check out the Echoes of the South Atlantic exhibition, curated by Ines Linke and Uriel Bezerra, which displays works by the artists Akinbode Akinbiyi, Ana Hupe, Anita Ekman, Antonio Társis, Ayrson Heráclito, Camila Sposati, Carol Barreto, Cássio Bonfim, Emeka Ogboh, Isaac Julian, Jonathan Dotse, Jota Mombaça, Sarojini Lewis, Tatewaki Nio, and Yolanda Chois. “In their works, they compose a sort of ‘alternative history,’ that challenges traditional historiographies and national borders, making resonate colonial pasts, the diasporas, and material and immaterial exchanges of the past-present,” describes the curatorial text. The exhibition remains open for visits at the Goethe Institut in Salvador until May 7th and then moves around through different cities in the Country.

    A printed version of C& Latin America is distributed during the collective exhibition. The publication unites articles, essays, interviews, and news on themes related to Africa, Afro-Latin America, and the Caribbean, in a multi-lingual online platform (www.amlatina.contemporaryand.com).

    The foyer of the Goethe Institut theatre transforms itself into a scenery for several performers “incorporated" by entities such as Pombo Gira, Preto Velho, Zé Pilintra, and Exu Tranca Rua, mixed with the image of the motoboy, as a metaphor of one who scrolls through the pathways of cities and drops off orders. They all wear the collections’ pieces - in black, red, or black - created by the stylist and artist Cássio Bonfim, with the participation of Malayka Sn and Fagundes Fotografia in the production of the performance for the conference.

    After the concentration at the theatre foyer, the “entities" go to the streets in Campo Grande, accompanied by a mini electrical trio and return to Goethe through the back entry of the space, completing the performance inspired by entities who, according to the Umbanda tradition, occupy the streets and accompany the people who live in them.

    The closing of the last night of the conference is to the sound of music in the garden of the Goethe Institut. The first to go up on stage was the South African musician and composer Neo Muyanga, who presents a repertoire that mixes protest songs with a strong political tone - inspired by the social matters of South Africa - and satires of romantic pop.

    In sequence, it is the turn of the composer and multi-instrumentalist Suyá Nascimento to contaminate the public with her guitar that is processed by analog and digital pedals. Having majored in Electronic Music Composition and Intermedia Arts by Mills College, in California (USA), she uses synthesizers and field recordings to create environments in her music, and uses video projections to complete the multi-sensory atmosphere of her work. The Cameroonian journalist and DJ, Ntone Edjabe, ends the last night of the conference with his very potent electronic music, full of references to the sonority of Cameroon and Nigeria, especially to the Afrobeat movement, that has Fela Kuti as its greatest exponent.
