Diedrich Diederichsen is considered one of the most important German theorists in the field of popular culture. Since the 80s, he engages various themes related to pop, contemporary art and politics. He stands out not only as a critic and scientist in the field of cultural studies, but also as a journalist, critic, curator and essayist. In 1979 he begins to work as a journalist in the music magazine Spex, which, in the context of the German language, becomes recognized as an important voice in subculture. In the same year he publishes his first book, Sexbeat, which has a significant impact, and thus, contributes to his establishment as a theorist and essayist. After he leaves Spex magazine, Diederichsen dedicates himself to his theoretical and academic work and begins to teach at various universities, such as, since 2006, the Fine Arts Academy in Viena. Diederichsen’s ample work incorporates a large variety of references. His production is profoundly marked by post-structuralism, marxism and situationism, relating also to literary currents of the 60s, such as New Journalism and the Beats, having as focus the relationship between subject, identity, politics and cultural industry in the context of our post-fordian society. He has his own experience as a starting point from which to speak of the zeitgeist, biography and history.
