Patrick Giguère ABR - JUN 2019
Patrick Giguère is a composer whose music is performed across the Americas and Europe. He has been artistic director of Erreur de type 27 and Ensemble Lunatik and is now general manager of Codes d’accès - three organisation that are dedicated to the music of today. Amongst important moments of the last few years, his work Le sel de la terre was awarded the 3rd Serge-Garant Prize from the Fondation Socan in 2015, was recorded by Thin Edge New Music Collective under the Redshift Records label and was broadcasted on BBC Radio 3. His work Revealing was premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Susanna Mälkki, at the Barbican in April 2018. During the fall of 2018, he took part in the Generation 2018 Canadian Tour with ECM+.
The practice of his art is a way for him to live amongst today’s society, and also to think and reflect on human relationships and the world that surrounds us. Patrick believes that music is not a detached and pure phenomenon, but an earthly one that is fundamentally linked to what it means to be human. His inspiration has different sources, but most importantly the performers themselves. The magic intensity of performance, the sensibility and virtuosity of the performers and the physicality of sound are constant sources of fascination.
Patrick wrote for ensembles like the London Symphony Orchestra, the Bozzini Quartet, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Ensemble Court-Circuit, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Exaudi vocal ensemble, Ensemble Paramirabo, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Le Page Ensemble, Aventa Ensemble, American Academy of Conducting in Aspen Orchestra and the Orchestre de la francophonie. He also collaborates with artists that share his artistic vision, like François-Xavier Roth, Richard Baker, Mark McGregor, Jeff Stonehouse and Cheryl Duvall.
In 2018 he completed his doctoral studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in England, after having studied at Université Laval. During his research, he focused on the concept duende and the values spontaneity, authenticity and exploration during a creative process. Joe Cutler, Éric Morin, Howard Skempton, Michael Finnissy, Richard Ayres, Andrew Toovey and Ana Sokolovic are composer with whom he worked closely and that influenced his evolution as a composer.
